What color is your ribbon?
It all started with a song about a man getting out of prison, who told his girl to tie a yellow ribbon
around the old oak tree if she still wanted him. Now there are
ribbons of all colors and they have become known by the generic term,
“awareness ribbons.”
In
Alaska right now, where we have the highest rates in the U.S. for rape
and child abuse, and a child is statistically three times as likely
to be beaten or sexually abused as the national average, people are
wearing green ribbons so that they can feel as if they’re doing
something about that. Our legislature, ignoring all the
socio-economic and public health issues that contribute to sexual abuse,
is debating a new law that will increase penalties and require more
strict supervision for convicted offenders. Greyfox and I had discussed it and shared our mutual disgust at these
boneheaded reactions, and I was going to blog about that today.I
was looking online for an image of a little green ribbon, and found more than I was looking for.

So did Tony Orlando and Dawn start all this shit or what?
Nevamind…. You told me the story started with this…
I suck at listening….
Can’t believe you researched all that colored colour stuff…
Is kinda sad it’s out of control……… Maybe you don’t think that way……. Is no matter….. I do….
Should maybe be one dirt coloured band to wear if ya care at all..
BTW….. I had no problems posting pics today other than it all locked up and went for ten shits everytime I tried…………… grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr……………..
Wow!
That’s a lot of colors to research! Facinating reading!
Blessed be!
I also saw a rainbow ribbon, think it was when I was in New York. Asked my daughter about it, but she wasn’t sure… probably something to do w/ gay and lesbian support?
Good grief! Thank goodness our Homeland Security Advisory System alerts are more simple. hahaha
A few months ago, a headline in the area newspaper caught my eye when it declared something to the affect that “Lawmakers tackle ID theft.” Wow. I hadn’t realized it was that simple. We could just pass laws to stop it? Why didn’t anyone think of that before?
effect?
like internet domain names, the best colors and combos get taken first.
Oh my heavens!
*shakes head*
It’s about as stupid as those damn bracelets. You know as well as I do that wearing a bracelet doesn’t do a damn thing to prevent or help …. whatever it’s supposed to do.
Of course, I’m mean and unpatriotic and unfeeling. Riiiiiiiiight.
*chuckle*
Geeeez… That’s pretty freakin’ ridiculous.
Holey Shit man, how can anyone keep track?
And what is all of this ribbon sporting really getting us?
–pin holes in the lapel.
I think some people just like to wear ribbons and bows. With this variety, they can pick and choose some “cause” that matches the rest of their outfit, right? Lord.
That’s insane. I knew there were a lot, but seriously!
what about my favorit color–clear??????
If that list had come from anyone else, I would not have believed it. Gimme a ribbon made of duct tape, I’ll wear it.
lol yeah – duct tape ribbons aren’t taken! What shall we support with the duct tape banner?
Colors are help us remind us how much is need to help others. Do you know any child that has died before its time? Do you have a friend that mother has died from breast cancer? If you only two of these colors that has affected anyone you know, would you donate? Of course you would. No no I dont think its wise to have mental illness ribbons. Then people will run from you. Tho estimated 300 million people are on medication from bi-polar to anti-depressant. And just think there is only 500 people in the United States. Its a still a stigma among us. (Shaking my head) I hope enough can get the messege out its the norm now with most of the population on medication. lol lol lol——this is a fact…go figure
ooops 500 million people in the United States
Damn, I never knew there were so many meanings for the colored ribbons. I was curious to hear further thoughts from you on the problem of violence against children in Alaska.
While I agree that the number/variety of ribbons and braceletes is simply silly, I don’t prejudge those who wear them in any colors, because you can’t really know why they choose to wear them without asking first. Sure, there are probably those who wear a bracelet and consider their contribution to the cause finished. On the other hand, I wear three bracelets, and they are all carefully chosen. Red (blood donor, which I do as often as I can), White (pro-choice, a cause I believe strongly in and went to D.C. to promote), and blue (as a dues-paying member of the University Democrats on my college campus).
All I’m saying is, please don’t assume that someone with a ribbon/bracelet is just mix-’n-matching to go with their earrings that day.
