  • Hey, hey,

    today is my “birthday.”

In twelve-step programs we refer to the anniversaries of our recovery as our “birthdays.”

Two years ago today I kicked the hardest addiction of all (for me) to quit: my lifelong addiction to sugar.

Sugar was just one part of what I quit that day.  I also quit
wheat, cow’s milk, and a bunch of other allergenic / addictive foods.

Since then, I’ve become about a hundred pounds lighter.   I
move more easily and breathe more freely.  It wasn’t a cure-all,
    but it did help.

Since my tastes are no longer perverted by the constant exposure to
refined sweets, I can appreciate the sweetness in fruits and other
    foods.

The closest I will come to eating candy this Halloween will be a kuri squash.

    Mmmm, how sweet it is!

    …aaaannd –

    HAPPY
    ANNIVERSARY
    GREYFOX

    Twelve and a half years

    of tears and fears –

then a year and a half

    of smiles and hope…

    what comes after this,

    who knows?

  • Hooray for you both!!

  • A most wonderful and happy Birthday, Kathy.  I am so very glad you were born… and congratulations to both of you on your anniversary.

  • Happy Birthday

  • you quit eating sugar on halloween? … that takes an unusual amount of nerve …

  • Happy Birthday!

  • it’s true–addiction to sugar does put on pounds.

  • Honestly, the thought of kicking sugar only scares me slightly less than the thought of kicking chocolate.  *shudder*  But that’s awesome for you!  And him!

  • Mazel Tov!  You give hope. Blessings abound

  • I don’t have hardly any salt or sugar and I have to be careful with milk, but that is all for medical reasons.

  • Happy Anniversary!

    Enjoy your squash!

  • happy everything to ya, babe.

i’d like to try that out, quittin the sugar and wheat and dairy. those are SO my down fall. i had bread and cheese for breakfast. i’m drinking coke and whiskey with it. hm. hella hella healthfull that.

  • Happy “Birthday”/Anniversary!

It’s interesting… I’ve been thinking about you and Greyfox lately.  Then I posted something today and received a comment from someone who referred me to your site.

The universe works in strange and mysterious ways.

  • Woohoo!
A good two years for you, almost that for Greyfox – something definitely to be proud of! And Halloween is the perfect day for a sugar abstention. That it lost you 100 pounds, and I lost 30 doing something similar last year – even for a few months – I find fascinating.

Could you please post (or link) to some of your wheat-free recipes? (at your leisure ) I had a look through your archives, but could find nought but your almond pumpkin-seed muffins. For myself, and particularly for my youngest, I need to start baking without wheat (probably rye, barley & oats too). The poor thing has so many allergies…

  • I LOVE those pumpkins! Just adorable!

  • Great setup!

Congrats on 2 years of being sugar free….I think you must be a saint, or insane or both, not sure….hmmmm…..an insane saint with enormous willpower?  Congrats to you and Greyfox!

  • squash, like carrots, are sooooo sweet.  (even to those of us sugar eaters like myself)    they’re pretty, too.

    happy “birthday”/anniversary/halloween!!!

  • WHo knows?  The Shadow do! Moo  hoo ha ha ha ha!

But seriously, that was very nice.  And don’t panic if you try to call–I forgot my phone, am going to the DT Meeting.

Sort of having a fibro-Nasrudin day, managed to spill some of my meds into my sno-jogs, thought I got them all, founda few little lumps when I went to put them on, took the pills anyway.  George Carlin would be proud.

Saw the photo of the clear table–awesome!

  • Happy Birthday, SuSu!

  • happy birthday… and thank you for sharing.

your memoirs are really captivating. i only wish i could write from experience.

  • I’m smiling.  Can you feel it?

  • man…sugar would be a hard one to quit- but congrats to you!!

  • 2 years without sugar, cows milk, wheat and processed garbage and you have survived.  Major props for that.  We tried it for our son’s ADHD.  Very difficult diet to enforce on children.  He would trade his packed lunches for Oreos.  It did make us all feel a lot better, but very hard to live up to.  Good job, SuSu!    -Maja

  • Happy late birthday fabulous and happy anniversary!
