  • Anchorage Daily News | Elder puts his teeth into rescue of boy in icy river

This is not exactly a local story, because we’re a long way from Scammon Bay (Alaska is a big place), but it’s one that’s not likely to turn up in your local paper, either.

First, the old man saw the kid drifting down the river alone in a skiff, and when he yelled (in Yupik) for the kid to stay put while he rowed out to get him.  The kid misunderstood, and jumped into the icy water….

Go ahead, read the whole story.  It’s a good one.

  • Nice!

I love how the mother says she didn’t think he’d be able to make the resuce because he is ‘kind of old’ .. yet the elder says that if he’d of held on tighter he’d have bitten through the line… like he was up for anything!

    Good going Mr elder sir!

  • wow! that was great!

  • Wow thats an intense story.

Good thing someone was around to help that kid.

Could have been a bad day.

  • Excellent read!!! Personally I wouldn’t underestimate the powers of any elder….seems like they were not raised in the same “can’t” society that we (meaning those in my generation or younger) have been…..thanx for sharing!

  • great news! what a rescue…

  • I think my grandmother and my great grandmother (when she was alive) could do anything they put their mind to. They always told me that if you believe in yourself anything is possible that and can’t never could get you nowhere, lol.

  • Excellent read !

Sounds like a great result all round

  • See…look after your teeth. They might come in handy

  • never second guess old people… i think that’s the moral of the story. and dont try to row-boat your way into the Bearing Sea unless you know what your doing and your crazy.  Great to hear some good news once in a while

  • I love your weblog. You must have spent a lot of time setting everything up because it shows. More importantly is the great stories & amazing pictures that you share with everyone. Thank you.
