My favorite holiday cookie:
Jelly Tarts (Nutty Thumbprints)
Blend until of creamy consistency:
1/2 cup softened unsalted butter
1/3 cup granulated white sugar
Add, beating after each addition:
1 whole large egg OR two egg yolks
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. grated lemon rind
1 cup sifted all purpose white flour
1/8 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. poppy seed (optional)
Chill dough: (refrigerate a few hours to overnight)
Roll into 1″ balls
Dip in:
slightly beaten egg white
Roll in:
chopped pecans or filberts (hazelnuts)
Bake at 375 for 5 minutes
Remove from oven, make thumbprints, fill with:
fruit jelly
and return to oven to bake for about 8 minutes more.
Enjoy! (They’re not on my diet, so enjoy some for me, too.)

Mmm, sounds yummy.
i had some wonderful thumbprints in Pittsburgh mabe with peanut butter and chocolate. does your book have a recipe for that too?!
There’s a holiday desset that I love…kind of similar to this one….Like a sugar cookie, with nuts rolled into it, and covered with powdered sugar. I wish I could remember the name…
RE your comment: If you didn’t get the point then you are in the same boat as the main character. Not knowing what to do when you’ve reached an emotional lowe point is the whole idea.
And that sounds like a good cookie, I’ll have to try it.
I think I’m having a heart attack just reading that recipe. Hope it tastes good. Everything should have at least one redeeming value. Of course, that’s a “should” so doesn’t count, I know. Enjoy.
Or should I say, yes I should: Have fun.
I’ve always loved thumbprint cookies…~off to get the notebook to write this one down too~ btw, still haven’t heard from you about the substitutes for soy grits and miso…any ideas? Soybeans and soysauce? Spot
