Did you know…
…that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month? It is, and I might not have known, except that the pink ribbons are popping up in various webby places I frequent. In Fairyland on Facebook, there are big pink flamingos popping out of hot pink flowerpots.
I was thinking about the popularity of the breast cancer cause, and wondering why some more masculine cancers, such as prostate cancer or testicular cancer, haven’t gotten as much publicity.
Some answers to that seem rather obvious, such as that cute little slogan, “Save the ta-tas.” It would be hard to beat that. Greyfox suggested, “Follow the bouncing balls.” ?? Naah, I don’t think so.
Then there is the ta-tas themselves. They’re cute, lots cuter than the contents of your average hairy scrotum… and then there’s that unruly guy the testicles hang around with.
Maybe the prostate is a better candidate. It is heart-shaped, after all. Some clever PR person could get some mileage out of that, maybe. Isn’t it interesting? The heart isn’t heart-shaped, but the prostate is.

Oh … the things I could say …
*zips it*
he he
LOL!
Too funny… Yeah, I don’t think anyone is going to get as worked up about testicles and prostates as they do over boobies, not anytime soon.
The most informative thing I’ve ever seen (personally) about breast cancer was a Dr. Oz show I happened to catch a week or two ago. He finally ‘splained in plain English exactly what the difference is between a fibrocystic lump and a potentially cancerous lump. I’ve been trying to get a doctor to explain that to me for years now, and it makes me want to smack all the ones who couldn’t explain worth a damn. If there had been any history of breast cancer in my family, I would be yelling at someone by now, because two of my friend’s moms are fighting it right now.
It is a very good thought. You’re right, the marketing of such a thing poses some difficulties, but prostate cancer really should receive the same attention and devotion to combatting through awareness and fund raising that breast cancer receives.
hmm… I got into a conversation about the fact that people are making money off of those pink ribbons and its NOT all going to cancer research!! They are taking advantage of the markebility of peoples suffering. THAT”S MESSED UP!! all though I think the bouncy’ hairy balls is hilarious!
There has been quite a lot more publicity and fundraising around prostate cancer in New Zealand in recent years. The most famous being Movember, which orginated across the ditch in Australia. Lots of usually clean shaven guys grow moustaches (and beards) in preparation for trading the hair for dollars in November. http://nz.movember.com/about/?=adwords
i learned my one new thing today.
@SoozieSuzy - Thanks for cluing me to Movember. Great idea, there.
