Just in case anyone reading this doesn’t already know:

Around here, we have 3 TVs in addition to one LCD computer monitor.  The newest of our 3 TVs hasn’t been plugged in since Greyfox gave it to us when he bought his new one.  It is sitting in the chair that was Greyfox’s when he lived here.  The chair faces the old TV he brought with him when he moved from Pennsylvania in 1990, which is connected to a VCR, obsolete Nintendo, and broken PS2.  It used to be connected to an antenna, until a heavy snow load took down the antenna a few years ago.  Doug and I thought about repairing the antenna, and decided that network TV wasn’t worth it.  The other big old CRT TV is placed in comfortable proximity to Couch Potato Heaven, and is used as a monitor for a PS2 and XBox, both of which sometimes show DVDs for our entertainment.  Maybe, if we could afford a satellite dish, or if cable TV extended this far, we might renew our old TV addictions, but for now Doug and I are still abstaining.

This is why I tend to ask my friends if they saw SNL, and get my Tina Fey second-hand from YouTube.  Last night, Greyfox told me during our nightly phone call that the real Sarah Palin was to be on Saturday Night Live.  I was thinking that Tina Fey probably did a better Palin than Sarah herself, but I did want to know how she did, so I checked Google this morning.

It was widely agreed that the best part of Palin’s appearance was Weekend Update where she recited rehearsed lines saying she had decided not to do the sketch they had rehearsed, and Amy Poehler took over and did a rap number complete with Eskimos and moose backup.  The moose is identifiable in the video, and was mentioned in the sketch, but some of the news stories call it a “caribou.”  Which reminds me, do you know the difference between a caribou and a reindeer?

The general consensus agrees with rushPRnews, that, “Sarah pales in comparison to Tina Fey.”

Frank James of the Tribune said, “One thing Poehler’s rap steered clear of was
Troopergate. Was that an accident or in the terms behind Palin’s
    appearance on the show?
“  (The video is embedded at that link.)

John McCain appeared on Fox News Sunday today.

WALLACE: Your running mate, Governor Palin, appeared last night on “Saturday Night Live.” Let’s watch…

MCCAIN: She did a great job.

    WALLACE: Let’s watch a clip.

    (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

    ALEC
BALDWIN: You can’t let Tina go out there with that woman. She goes
against everything we stand for. I mean, good lord, Lorne. They call
her — what’s that name? They call her cara — cara — what do they call
    her again, Tina?

SARAH PALIN: That would be “Caribou Barbie.”

ALEC BALDWIN: “Caribou Barbie,” thank you, Tina.

After Baldwin realizes his mistake, he says, “‘You are way hotter in person.’ But the ‘Caribou Barbie’ replied with
her best line of the evening ‘Stephen is my favorite Baldwin brother,’
as Alec took her by the arm and led her off stage.” (rushPRnews)

Did you see it?  What did you think?  Did it help or hurt Palin’s image, or do you think people will just see in her whatever they want to see based on their preconceptions?

Colin Powell has endorsed Barack Obama.  NPR says this gives Obama, “national security credibility.”  Do you agree?

  • I think the majority of what people see conforms to their preconceived ideas.

  • I did see it and Sarah didn’t look that thrilled that Amy did the rap with all that vigor. The way Palin tapped on the desk as she was stating that she was glad she didn’t do it was restrained at best. My mother said months ago that Sarah would do better in Hollywood than Washington sums it up for me. Mom’s 87 and rather insulted that this is the woman that is offered up for the VP. I’m not sure what her image is as the people who love her love her.  And the one who think she an idiot still do.

  • I saw Colin Powell’s endorsement and he did more than just speak of the positives on Obama’s side, he said that McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate was a terrible mistake and that she’s demonstrated over the past 8 weeks that she’s completely unqualified.

It was interesting.  And I do think that it adds to Obama’s cache.  If Powell weren’t convinced, he would have remained silent as he has in the past.

I have a lot of respect for Powell in part because when he discovered the degree to which he’d been duped, lied to, and used by Bush, he resigned.  He didn’t throw a big fit, he just removed himself.  That took a lot of character.  He’s been one of the few Republicans I’ve admired in recent years.

  • @quiltnmomi - I have always had a lot of respect for Colin Powell.  I suppose it’s inevitable that somebody will try to minimize the impact of his endorsement by bringing up race.

  • As I think highly of both you and Quiltnmomi when it comes to discussions like this, I was very interested to read all of this. I did not watch any of it so cannot give any quality input, but I have felt from the beginning that Sarah was a huge mistake on their part.

  • colin powell never impressed me,,, wasnt he in charge of one of those fiascos we called a war in the middle east???  i think he was,,,

nope,, never thought much of him.

wars are for killing enemy,,, not much else,,,,

snl,,, hahahahaha,,, naw,,, saturday nites,,, i usually do other stuff rather than watch tv,,,, that would be every nite actually.

  • Did not see.

The negatives from both sides of the campaign have probably made the eggs in our ‘fridge rot by now!

We got OBAMA ’08 signs and put them in our front windows yesterday.

Colin Powell, I respect the man.  Yes, I am glad he endorsed Obama.

Personally, I hope the mess we are in will in the long run have the same effect that good pruning has on a fruit tree.

    Stay well!

  • I haven’t been watching TV or YouTube lately (who has time for YouTube?  Where do I find this time?).  In response to your second question, I think Colin Powell is a man of immense dignity and respect.  I think that his endorsement will help Barack Obama.

  • Governor Palin wasn’t very funny.  She just kind of sat there and let everyone else do the heavy lifting.  Basically, she allowed others to make fun of her but didn’t engage in any self-depracating humor.

As for General Powell’s endorsement, more than anything I think it says that Senator Obama’s approach to foreign policy – engagement rather than invasion – is the right way to go.  As someone living overseas now, I see very clearly the need for us to take this new approach.

  • I saw parts of the skit on the news. During the rap scene, the real Sarah Palin looked like she was in an awkward position.

As a politician, you have to maintain some level of ‘respectability’ - it’s probably not wise to get up and start dancing to rap music or making crude jokes, lest you alienate a more conservative part of your voter base.

At the same time, if you just sit there, you’ll come off as a typical unfunny dolt of a polly. So she did a little head moving thing, which came across as a bit forced.

  • One of the residents at work invited me to his room to watch it with him after my shift. We laughed alot. But I think anyone that’s gonna laugh at her in that respect is not gonna be impressed that she did the skit. And anyone that is pro sara palin prolly wouldn’t be watching in the first place.

It was amusing though. My 84 year old friend laughed so much I thought he was having heart trouble!

    LOL

  • I watched it last night, online.  Pretty ridiculous and contrived, but that’s SNL for you.  :)   I don’t think it’s going to change anyone’s opinion of her.  For me, it further confirmed her image in a negative way.  Her fans will convince themselves that it was really cool of her, though.

  • Do you subscribe to BrassCheck?
It’s the voice I listen to each morning.  My wake up call, so to speak.

    http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/446.html

Two young women from Wasilla, AK talk about Sarah Palin this morning.

  • I didn’t see SNL, but I’ll find it on YouTube later.  It won’t change my opinion of her… unless she suddenly became a hell of alot smarter by making her appearance.

As for Collin Powell… he’s a bright guy.  Smart enough to get the hell away from Dubya.  I think his endorsement will only help Obama, though I’m sure on the right will say it’s race based endorsement.  (I believe Limbaugh has already stated this opinion…)

  • @BlueCollarGoddess - I went to the site, but didn’t wait for the video to load.  I recognized one of those young women from somewhere.  Maybe she works where I shop, or shops where I do.

I didn’t subscribe, because our connection can’t keep up with our modem and time keeps on slipping, slipping….

@Apocatastasis - Your report suggests about how I’d expect her to behave in such a situation.  I think somebody, whoever thought putting her on there would be good for the campaign, believed that more exposure couldn’t hurt.

Funny you should mention, “dolt.”  Brasscheck called her a “thuggish dolt.”
