  • Scraping the Bottom of the Barrel

Months ago, it seemed to me that the political hoopla season was getting off to an earlier start than in most presidential years.  I wasn’t sure about that, not having paid particular attention in the past or kept notes.  I thought, maybe, it was just an illusion brought on by my aversion to much of the current crop of politicians and my general weariness with corrupt Alaskan politicians.

Lately, it seems I might have been correct back then.  At least, some of the recent things I have heard suggest that various campaigns and campaigners have reached the depths of their creative imaginations and are, in effect, scraping the bottom of the barrel.

What brought up that thought this morning was the response by Sarah Palin’s spokeswoman to revelations that she has been claiming per diem payments for the time she spends at home in Wasilla.  In addition to saying that the governor is too busy to cook, she mentioned that this governor has been costing the state a lot less than her predecessor, Frank Murkowski.  *sigh*  One would have to go to ridiculous extremes to cost the state more than Frank did.

And, tell me, when was the last time that lipstick became a campaign issue in a presidential race?  Is this a first?

P.S.  Check out Alaska Real, a blog by an Alaska Native woman.  She really rocks.

  • I think Jackie O had fashion tips, but that was in another time and she was a first lady. Yes indeed the barrel is down to the bare wood.  Funny thing though.  It still stinks!

  • Thank you for subscribing and I hope your posts get more views.

  • I’ve just spent the last hour reading (for the third time) the email by Anne Kilkenny re: Sarah Palin and then searching Snopes.com.  I think I found the one spot that has both pro- and anti-Palin. LOL  Not sure why I’m doing this, I certainly wasn’t voting for the GOP candidate(s) in the first place.  Trouble is, I’m not sure our Democratic candidate is a great deal better and my vote for him in this extremely red state won’t count for much.  Politics is politics.  sigh

  • @wixer - ”I’m not sure our Democratic candidate is a

  • @CatcInTheRye - Feel free to recommend them to your friends.

  • I tried to click on the link to the Alaska Lady who rocks, and it kept leading me to a picture of a strange-looking leaf. Oh, well, I can always searhch it out.

  • Every candidate this go-round has issues, and I have issues with them!  I have to struggle with my conscience to vote for any of them at all, either side. Ugh. I dislike politics more and more every election.

  • @October27 - That is weird.  The link works for me.  Her name is Writing Raven and she blogs at blogspot as AlaskaReal@blogspot.com

  • @LetMeGoToo - I hear you.  I keep remembering the old slogan from the 1960s, “Don’t vote!  It only encourages them.”  As I’ve said here before, my family votes to earn our right to complain.

  • @SuSu - yes… that’s kind of where I’m coming from too, anymore.

  • If someone uses the phrase lipstick on a pig to talk about people who pork barrel spend but pretend not to, the person is talking about the pork barrel, not the gender.  If you bring up pork and then fly off the handle when someone says pig then what are you going to do in a tense international situation?  I hope people do vote for Obama, the mature thoughtful candidate.  I’ve met him and just for starters, he is a good listener and likes people and is slow to anger.  I think he might get a bit angry about the sex ed ad which is really inflammatory.  I hope he does.

  • @SuSu - on my screen, your moniker is superimposed right over the link; however, I googled and found the site. Thanks for the recommend.

  • @Isismoon - As I understand it, that “sex ed” issue is really about preventing child sexual abuse.  It is good hearing from someone who has met Obama.  I can speak knowledgeably about Palin, and I need to know more about her opposition.

  • @SuSu - He’s very level headed and good with details.  Nice too.  I met him at the beginning of the campaign when he had lots of time to chat with voters and listen to what they had to say.  I was even in a group of people that he and Michelle asked to spend several hours with so that they could get a feel for what our issues were and what we thought could and should be done.  He was an underdog then and I was impressed with his ability to reflect on what people had to say without launching into a speech about how he would save us.  In fact, his whole campaign is based on people paying attention and wanting to be a part of government again.  I recall saying that I thought No Child Left behind was a conspiracy to ruin public schools and keep people uneducated so that there would always be an underclass. The Obamas did not argue with me or try to talk me out of it.  I liked their even tempers and interest in real middle class people.  Michelle really is all she seems to be–a very kind Midwestern girl from the south side of Chicago who got to law school because her public school teachers encouraged her when she was young.   It’s hard to imagine that the people I sat and chatted with are now in front of thousands.  I got a chance to have coffee with Jill Biden and Hunter Biden too.  They are very down to earth.

  • Truly the repugs are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

  • She’s headline news here too!
