  • Missing Backpackers Called for Help

The search force looking for Abby Flantz and Erica Nelson was increased today, and now they can all go home.  This morning, as Erica Nelson’s family was in the park being briefed by rangers, Mrs. Nelson received a cell phone call from her daughter.  She was told that they had “gotten lost.”  The signal was weak, but helicopters were able to home in on it, and the women are reported to be safe.

  • wow that is lucky to have even the slightest cell phone reception.

  • Wow.  That’s amazing.

  • thank goodness…at least one of them was from MN….we may not have a wilderness like Alaska but at least we understand the importance of certain things like a cell phone and how to use them when lost

  • @fairydragonstar - Unanswered questions:  Why they didn’t use it sooner, why they didn’t do any of the common things to signal for help, why they didn’t try to signal any of the airplanes or helicopters that had been going over them for days….  I think it might be premature to evaluate anyone’s smarts, and it was the one from Nevada who called her mom.

  • @SuSu - well not sure…I know we are taught from very early on that when lost conserve the cell phone battery at all costs…but then there are two types of Minnesotans…the city folk who have forgotten everything and the Jack Pine Savage that remembers that technology is wonderful but you need to have mittens and knife at all times as weather can go from 80 one day to -10 the next…and I know your weather and your distance between civilization is much greater then ours and changes more then ours does….but I would think from being from Gaylord MN she should have known better….cause that is in the middle of nowhere MN…so she should have been better prepared

  • I’m glad to hear the news.

  • There was something about this a little while ago on my Yahoo news and I thought about you when I read it.  I’ve been meaning to stop by here and say hello but I had to go in the back of my office and clean up some old junk mail for a while until the office closed and I could commit the heresy of showing up in the front of the office without my necktie.

  • WOW….I’m glad it turned out ok…but, wow. It took them that long to call for help?

  • There are threethings that we need when we go out, a watch, a mobile and a pen.

  • @chowkhushi - A GPS with an emergency locator beacon isn’t a bad idea, either.

  • YEs, I agree…

  • With a map and compass (and knowledge of how to use them together) you go out, have your fun, and go back home again all without electricity.
