  • 75 Years Ago, Part 2

I scanned nine more images today from the 3 old National Geographics from 1932 and 1933.  They are all in the album, 75 years ago, and here are a few samples:

From an article on a flood in Manchuria, I got the image below, and one other that isn’t as blatantly chilling, but has it’s own subtly sadistic twist.

The next one, and another in the album, were from a record-setting stratospheric balloon ascent.  Look closely at the crash helmets.

Each of the magazines has one article illustrated with color photos.  In February, 1933, it was about the Pacific Northwest.  I scanned two black and white images in addition to the one below of young women in a sewing class, modeling their wooden skirts and vests.

The next photo was not in the magazines.
This photo was taken on Byrd’s expedition to the South Pole.
It is Norman Vaughan, a man I met when he was in his 80s.
He mushed dogs for Byrd, and I scanned an aerial shot of Byrd’s dog teams.

  • My favorite thing about old national geographics are the advertisements.  It’s so cool not just to see what products they used to have, but the way people advertise has changed alot over the years too.

  • I think, in California, those would pass as motorcycle helmets…

  • I was just explaining to my 7 year old that beauty can be painful.  I will show her these wooden skirts.  Watch out for those splinters.  ha ha  My dad had a old Sears catalog that had some great ads.  My sister and I would read it out loud to each other and entertain ourselves for hours.

  • I can’t get the picture of my head, out of my head. That sounds silly–I wish it were silly. Striking image for me.

  • I love the absurdity of the wooden dresses. I’ve been to Hoquiam. Coastal town, right up against what used to be the richest old-growth forest in the nation. So of course they’re trying to promote wood as a clothing material, in no less than National Geographic.

  • I love looking at old images like that

  • Wooden dresses, its awesome!!!! They’re probably not so comfortable, but look very clever. THAT’S recycling, LOL.

I wonder if I’d get fewer flyers in my mail if I put the heads of one of the delivery guys on my tree……..
