I popped in here today, against medical advice, to upload some pictures I captured over the past three weeks or so. Now I understand why I wasn’t spozed to do this. I’m very weak and tired, and Xanga really sucked me in once I started reading messages and comments. I have a new reader who already feels like an old friend, and of course my old friends’ lives go on while I’m out of touch. There is no catching up, I’ll just have to pick up again when I can come back full time.
A few weeks back, before the snow got deep, I noticed on a trip to the outhouse that a big flock of little birds, certainly more than fifty and maybe fewer than a hundred, were foraging for birch seeds in our trees. Individuals would flit in small flocks among three of the big trees laden with cones, leaving the snow beneath them littered with little brown bits of debris. You’d need to click for the bigger version of this to see the few birds that stuck around after I went back in for the camera.
Below is a blow-up of the best bird shot.
Eerie filtered light from a just-risen sun a week or so later…
Later still, just last week, I wanted to capture some of the newly fallen snow, and ended up sitting on my butt in it as I squatted for a better angle on this one.
The four shots above were taken in my front yard. All three below were taken just yesterday, after more snowfall, in my backyard.
Below, along the right edge, is a snow cornice hanging over the edge of our roof.
Now I am on my way back to the end of the couch next to the woodstove, to behave myself.

So nice to see you even if only briefly….
One of the places on my list of “love to see” is Alaska. Thank you so much for making it a little bit possible in the now. I always enjoy your photos and most especially the time you take with the discriptives, which always enhance the enjoyment for me.
Thinking of you often and fondly.
Hope to hear fom you again soon, until then know that there is positive, healing energy directed your way from a small corner of Nova Scotia…..
You’re back!
Beautiful! I’m envious of the sunshine you have.
I’m looking to getting more snow, deep enough for skiing and snowshoeing.
Glad to see you on even if only briefly—hope you feel better soon! Beautiful pics:)
speaking of old women visiting in dreams… [your header statement]…
you were in mine last night [not that we're old or anything]. you and doug were with me and my four xangan vacation friends. we’d taken a trip to washington d.c. we were outside the white house at one point, waiting for a speech to be given. i remember being able to see the reporters below us. [the view of the white house wasn't like it really is...it, and the surrounding grounds, were set lower than the land outside the fence line. we didn't drive cars, we drove some sort of buggies that didn't require horses. at one point i was even in alaska...way the hell out in the middle of nowhere alaska, at your place. [which was nothing like your place really is.]
anyhoo. i rarely remember dreams, but this one is still running thru my head.
beautiful pics…simply beautiful. and i’m glad you bucked the rules to share them. now…keep resting before i have to start fussing at you.
snow, beauty, xanga
Happy Thanksgiving, Friend.
Over the years you’ve become a real touchstone and one of my favorite writers ever.
I am grateful to the Fox and Doug for caring for you.
I know you’ll be back where you belong soon.
For now, enjoy your couch.
I hope you’ve had a Happy Thanksgiving, even though not feeling the best. I wish you well.
I enjoy the pics, and have been known to swipe a couple for my desktop backgrounds. Thanks.
That is a good place for the snow! We’ve only had a dusting so far and I hope it stays that way!
