Surreal Photo Challenge
This week’s subject is suggested by A_storm_in_Heaven.
This challenge could well be an embarrassment to me. I never have understood what surrealism is. Etymology suggests that it is more than real, above real, beyond real. What is more real than real?
Google told me:
Definitions of surreal on the Web:
- strange or bizarre.
www.curriculumsupport.nsw.edu.au/litnumsite/Lie/glossary.html- phantasmagoric:
characterized by fantastic imagery and incongruous juxtapositions; “a
great concourse of phantasmagoric shadows”–J.C.Powys; “the incongruous
imagery in surreal art and literature”- dreamlike: resembling a dream; “night invested the lake with a dreamlike quality”; “as irrational and surreal as a dream”
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn“Strange… bizarre… incongruous juxtapositions…” surreal is in the eye of the beholder, it seems to me. Each of these images has a story, but telling the stories would probably detract from the effect.
- strange or bizarre.

Woah… those are some images! Took me a minute to see what I was looking at…. and even then I wasnt sure until I saw the hooves….
Id say that was a surreal enough entry for sure.
I had bad dreams last night and these pictures kind of make me think of the images that might be in a hunters bad dream…..
Thank you for the definition of Sureal .. I was struggling with it too .. your photos for the challenge are great!

I like your photographic interpretation
All I can say is–
Hello, Dali, well hello, Dali, it’s so nice to see you back where you belong. . . .
I wan’t sure what surreal was either. Good job!
Nice interpretation of surreal. I was a little freaked out (I’m not a hunter and I haven’t been close to a carcass). For me to have such a strong reaction means (to me) that you did an awesome job!!
wow…great job. are those deer legs? yikes!
this is a tough one!
oohh i don’t think i want to know what happened with the “deer”? scarey but yes i think you got the surreal part.
Coooooooool pics! What is the last shot? Can’t figure that one out.
Oh… and lol at ArmsMerchant. Hello Dali. :p
Oh my is that the carcass of a quardruped?! And maggots!
Thanks for your submission. You just made the contest more competitive!
I love the pics! Surreal indeed. But all too real, yes?
I’m not sure about the meaning of surreal either, but I think you captured it well. lol
Cool images, if you want a really good idea of what surrealism is look up Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte. They are two very famous surrealist artists.
*sparkle
on my xanga, you said….
I live without running water or indoor plumbing, heat with a woodstove in winter (Alaska), and yet much of my time is spent on the internet. For fifteen years, while my youngest son was growing up, we lived off the electric grid, and would still be there if a neighbor hadn’t asked me to housesit and take care of his dog and cats while he spent the winter in Florida. He only came back to get the dog and give me the title to his mobile home, and we haven’t heard from him since 2000.

Yes Hi susu.
Living with adult high level autism, is a “trip”! I find that I notice things that no one else does, and i think only in images, thus politics and many books are almost beyond me as there are no pictures in politics, only verbal words.
I live in a senior tower, in the heart of a city, although very pretty with lots of trees. I had a cabin on a Finger lake, though, for years.
Interesting how one “ends up” living in certai nplaces and situations, I feel that there are Plans coming from the soul, that directs. the soul can Feel the future and all of this is non-verbal. I feel, myself, that in about 3 to 4 years that place in Alaska might be the best place to live as most of the “south” will be vocanoed, tidal waved, in to a ceasing of civilization, in the 2012 end times.
[some of my own Visions are written up, about my being shown some of the earthchanges, at

I will read some of your site when I have more time.

nice photos
Oh my goodness! I think you win the “most interesting subject for the topic” prize!!! I think I see maggots and fur and bones ~ oh my! Great job!
Surrealism is always accompanied by thinking of Salvadore Dali. I find it interesting in that Revelations in the bible is full of such images. Were they read to those who reported them?
The photo of the ribcage is amazing and you have put together a perfect collection for this challenge!
ewwwwwww ewwwwwwwwwwww ewwwwwwwwww, but they are interesting and unique shots regardless. I give you a 100 for bravery of sticking you arm inside and for getting as close as you did to the corpse or what is left of it. My daughter has a picture of a dead blackbird on her cell phone walpaper, we nicknamed him splat for ovious reasons. Have a great sunday!

great photos for the challenge, a little icky maybe but quite normal for where you live and your lifestyle i imagine.
Those are some incredible pictures….I was a bit grossed out when I first saw them, and a little sad for the deer, but really this is part of the natural cycle of life. These were very interesting photos….
