  • Signs

This weeks photo challenge is hosted by CFairy

    Her subject is Signs

The sign of a sloppy snowplow operator.  Lots of the signs in our neighborhood lean over even more than this one.

    outhouse sign

When I was a kid, some of my relatives lived on farms and had outhouses.  I don’t recall any of them having signs of any sort inside.  Many of the outhouses around here have signs that were hung with facetious intent.  One that comes to mind was a standard hazard warning sign saying, “poisonous gas.”  The outhouse at our old place used to have a “no swimming” sign, in French: “defense de baigner.”  One of my neighbor hung a couple of framed cartoons featuring outhouses in his.  After a big party, people started saving outhouse cartoons for him, and he papered the whole inside of his privy with them.

I think the reason for the proliferation of funny signs in our outhouses is related to the fact that most of us came here from more civilized places, having grown up with indoor plumbing.  To people who have always had outdoor toilets, they are not inherently funny as they seem to be to many modern civilized people.

  • i’ve never used an outhouse except those little porto potties and i don’t consider them the same thing. one is portable and the other stationary. now that i think about it i don’t even think i’ve ever seen one.

  • The snowplow guys in NH do the same thing!  Boy what I would have given for a snowplow during the storms here in Oklahoma this past winter.

  • we had an outhouse when i was a little kid,,,,, i dont remember it tho,,,,, i think there is still a stick standing where our electric meter was,,,,, we had no running water either.  got pics of us taking a bath on the porch in a tub,,,,,

i guess i had a skilled surgeon,,,,, i was waiting for him to start and he said he was done,,,,, ive had a harder time at the dentist.

  • being in florida, we don’t have snowplows (duh) but the mailmen sometimes do their own damage to signs and mailboxes…

  • We have quite the crew of ‘sod plowers’ here as well, it like they think they are going to get an award for plowing lawn to lawn wide each winter.

  • Hi sweety–

Xgram–it started to drizzle a bit ago, decided what the hey–got such a deal at Steve’s–can of turkey chili AND a can of Beefaroni for a buck for both.  It is raining in Big Lake, too.

Now I got dinner and lunch covered.

  • Great photos for the challenge .. I remember my grandparents had an outhouse .. not a pleasant experience!  :o )

  • I love the plant photos from last time. Collecting cartoons for the outhouse is a good idea. I’d like to develop some sort of theme for my new place, too. Peace!

  • funny, i think maybe the plow driver has relations working near here too!

  • These are great signs…I think that is really funny that people are hanging that sort of sign in their outhouses, really very clever!

  • great job!
I hate outhouses….they give me the creeps! lol..

  • When I was a kiddo, we camped at my grandparents’ cabin in BC – they had an outhouse.  It was scary and exhilerating at the same time (heck, I was 5).
